DraftKings has officially connected its online poker rooms in Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, establishing a joint multi-state network after receiving recent regulatory approval.
On Monday (July 13), the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) revealed its approval for DraftKings to pool player liquidity between its online poker rooms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
DraftKings runs its iGaming platform in Michigan via a collaboration with the Bay Mills Indian Community, which owns the Bay Mills Resort & Casino located in Brimley.
“This approval reflects the strength of our partnership with Bay Mills Indian Community and the thoroughness of our regulatory process,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams.
“As Michigan’s multistate poker network continues to grow, we remain focused on ensuring every operator meets the same high bar for fairness, security, and player protection.”
Player liquidity is essential for a thriving online poker business, as the game is peer-to-peer and requires a sufficient player pool around the clock to meet user demands. Casinos and iGaming operators generate revenue from poker via rake, a portion of each pot that compensates the house for organizing the games.
Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania participate in the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA). Michigan became part of the interstate agreement in 2022.
Delaware, Nevada, and West Virginia are members of MSIGA too. DraftKings does not provide sports betting or iGaming services in Delaware and Nevada. The company operates as a licensed iGaming provider in West
Virginia, but it does not provide online poker due to the state's small population.
MSIGA enables operators such as DraftKings to connect their software among member states. A player located in Michigan can join the same virtual table as a player in Pennsylvania.
Every player receives a weighted rake determined by their geographical position using geolocation technology. In other words, MSIGA does not divide the pooled rake but follows each dollar back to the player who produced it.
The costs associated with regulatory and financial compliance are significant, which is why DraftKings has not introduced online poker in West Virginia. The company has chosen against providing online poker in Connecticut, a state where it operates iGaming, even though state legislators proposed entering into MSIGA.
Connecticut and West Virginia hold the 29th and 39th positions in population among the 50 states, respectively. Pennsylvania ranks fifth, Michigan is tenth, and New Jersey is eleventh.
In 2025, Michigan's iGaming sector achieved a revenue milestone, as the state's online casinos reported gross gaming revenue (GGR) nearing $3.1 billion. The state obtained $597.5 million in related taxes from the online gambling boom.
In 2025, New Jersey's iGaming GGR reached $2.9 billion, while online poker produced approximately $30.3 million in rake. Last year, Pennsylvania's iGaming earnings amounted to $2.7 billion.
