According to a Nevada sheriff, the individual who plunged from the 20th floor of Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino on Saturday seemingly took his own life. 

The individual was recognized as Daniel Tovar, 31, from Pomona, California, Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley announced on Monday. Coverley also informed Reno TV station KRNV that the fall was probably a suicide. 

Tovar was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. Saturday after sustaining life-threatening injuries in the fall at the Stateline, Nev. gaming facility. 

His body came to rest close to the valet entrance of the casino. He was subsequently identified through fingerprints and DNA, as reported by the Tahoe Daily Tribune. 

On Saturday earlier, Tovar rode a bus from Los Angeles to Stateline. 

Officials did not disclose a reason for the suicide.

Florida Illegal Betting Operation Shut Down 

Three individuals were apprehended in Tampa, Florida, on Monday, the day following a police raid on an illegal gambling establishment. 

The raid on Sunday resulted in the confiscation of computers, gambling receipts, over $12K in cash, and a semi-automatic handgun. 

Authorities disclosed that the gaming den operated within the All Stars Tampa Domino Club. 

Officers from the Tampa Police Department received a tip regarding the illegal gambling operation in December 2023. Covert officers monitored the gambling establishment closely. 

According to police, customers at the business usually spent three minutes inside and left with paper receipts. 

The covert detectives entered the establishment and placed six wagers on sports events. They featured an NBA game between the Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors. 

Investigators provided evidence to local prosecutors, who successfully obtained a search warrant from a judge. 

The individuals suspected were recognized as Marcelino Perez, aged 67; Charlie Parilla, aged 32; and Kendrick Franklin, aged 29. 

Perez faced charges for conspiracy to engage in bookmaking, a RICO violation, and being an agent or employee operating a gambling house. 

Franklin faced two charges for wagering on the outcomes of contests or trials of skill, a charge for bookmaking, a charge for violating RICO, and a charge for being an agent or employee of maintaining a gambling establishment. 

Parilla faced four counts of wagering on trial or contest outcomes, a count of operating a bookmaking operation, a count for violating RICO, and a count for being an agent or employee running a gambling establishment. 

The three individuals showed up in court on Monday. Bail was established for Perez at $52,650, for Franklin at $57,650, and for Parilla at $62,650.

"This is more than just sports betting,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement quoted by Tampa Bay TV station WTVT. “This is an illegal business that was set up.”

“The success of this [police] operation is a testament to the tireless work and attention to detail shown by our officers,” Bercaw added. “To anyone thinking about running an illegal gambling operation in Tampa, consider this [is] your warning.”
