American Place Casino Breaks Ground This Week in Waukegan, Illinois
In Waukegan, Illinois, Full House Resorts is finally beginning construction on the American Place Casino.
Full House reports that building on American Place will start this Wednesday, June 3, following years of postponement due to legal challenges filed by a Wisconsin tribe. On a 42-acre plot of land close to Chicago's North Shore, the $302 million project is being constructed.
According to Full House, American Place, which is around 30 minutes north of O'Hare International Airport and 60 minutes south of Milwaukee, will boost Waukegan's economy, create jobs, and provide entertainment. Before receiving all of its funding, the Las Vegas-based business is starting construction.
"We are well down the road on arranging the long-term financing for American Place. We decided to begin construction now, while we complete the legal and banking work on such financing. The early stages of construction take time and can be funded from our existing resources and cash flows,” said Daniel Lee, Full House CEO.
In two years, Lee stated, the company intends to open the permanent American Place.
The Long Way to Construction
In 2019, state legislation gave Waukegan a casino construction opportunity. The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe of Wisconsin filed a lawsuit against the Illinois Gaming Board and the City of Waukegan, claiming that Full House Resorts' offer was improperly reviewed. As a result, the project became entangled in legal proceedings. Full House Resorts won the casino license through a competitive bid.
In January 2025, the Illinois Supreme Court heard the case and unanimously decided against the tribe. Since February 2023, Full House has run a makeshift casino in Waukegan.
“Three years ago, we opened our doors in a temporary facility and promised the Waukegan community something bigger. Today, we’re moving ahead to deliver on that promise,” said Jeff Babinski, general manager of American Place Casino.
“The permanent American Place will expand what we offer, create hundreds of new jobs, and give our guests, team members, and community a destination they can be proud to call their own,” Babinski added.
There are about 900 slot machines, 40 table games, a poker room, and a sportsbook at the makeshift American Place Casino.
The Full House statement stated that the permanent casino will feature "40% more slot machines and 85% more table games," however exact figures were not disclosed. There will be more eateries and bars at the permanent casino. The Mansion, a 150-room hotel with 20 "ultra-exclusive" VIP villas, is another feature of the property.
“Similar in character to the most exclusive accommodations in Las Vegas, The Mansion will accommodate guests in private villas ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet,” the American Place Casino website reads.
